ARTIST STATEMENT:

“Self-portraiture” is a print that marks a pivotal moment of self-empowerment and reclaiming agency over my own body and identity. For years, I have grappled with the invasive gaze of others, the unsolicited judgments, and the relentless pressure to conform to external expectations of beauty and worth. This work is a physical manifestation of my journey toward liberation and self-acceptance.

The print is a representation of my own body, rendered in a way that is both intimate and unapologetic. The choice of medium— linocuts, was to achieve very harsh yet feminine textures to highlight the strength, resilience, and multifaceted nature of my personal narrative. The form is posed in a stance of defiance and confidence, a stark contrast to the vulnerability often imposed upon me by the objectifying gaze of others.

The surface of the body is textured with a rectangular rigged gauges was intentional; it symbolizes the many ways in which I have been seen and perceived, yet it also serves to disrupt and challenge those perceptions.

“Self-Portraiture” is not just about the act of being seen; it is about being seen as I choose to present myself. It is about shedding the layers of imposed identity and stepping into the light of self-defined visibility. This piece is an assertion of my autonomy over my body and my narrative. It is a celebration of the freedom to define beauty, strength, and self-worth on my own terms, free from the confines of others' expectations.

Through this work, I invite viewers to reflect on their own experiences with visibility and self-empowerment. I hope this piece serves as a catalyst for others to find their own path to self-acceptance and to recognize the power in defining themselves as they wish to be seen. It is a testament to the journey of reclaiming one's image and identity, and the profound liberation that comes with it.
